CEMS in  Curtis-Teixeiro biomass plant – Greenalia Group in Galícia (Spain)

New world record: The lowest certified (QAL1) Hg measuring range!

Gasmet Technologies is delighted to announce that its Continuous Mercury Monitoring system (CMM) has successfully completed the EN15267-3 testing using CVAF technology for the analysis of Mercury (Hg).

“We have now the world’s lowest EN15267 certified range for measurements of Mercury. Our certification is for 0 to 5 µg/m3. This is a new world record, making our CMM future-proof for declining emission limits!”, says Matti Haapala, Application Development Manager at Gasmet.

On the basis of the assessment and the ranges required for compliance with EU Directives, Gasmet’s CMM is considered suitable for use on waste incineration and large coal-fired combustion plant applications.

Final Agreement on LCP BREF

The Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2017/1442 established best available techniques (BAT) conclusions, under Directive 2010/75/EU for large combustion plants (LCPs). LCPs are combustion plants with total rated thermal input equal to or greater than 50 MW.

The BAT conclusion was published on 17th August 2017 in the Official Journal of the EU and will come into effect with a four years transition period.

The LCP BREF (Large Combustion Plant Best Available Technology Reference document) includes new BAT-associated emission levels (BAT-AELs) e.g. for mercury. This happens for the first time at the EU level and helps national authorities to lower the environmental impact of around 3500 LCPs.

“The new ELVs (Emission limit values), set by the national authorities, will be based on BAT-associated emission levels. The BAT AEL-ranges will be the reference for setting the ELVs, taking into account fuel type, combustion technology and other relevant conditions.”, says Matti Haapala.

BAT BREF setting new monitoring requirements

“According to the new BAT conclusions, Hg should be measured continuously in the LCPs equal to or greater than 300MWth. Also, ammonia (NH3) needs to be measured continuously if SCR (selective catalytic reduction) and/or SNCR (selective non-catalytic reduction) are used.”, says Matti Haapala.

“Now it’s time to start preparing for the future requirements. In few years, combustion plants need to meet stricter emission limits as described in the LCP BREF document. This, in a way, sets requirements for the manufacturers of emission monitoring systems as lower concentrations of gases needs to be measured. More often continuous monitoring of compounds is also required. At Gasmet we are ready for these new requirements.”, says Rami Vuorinen Chief Technology Officer at Gasmet.

The Gasmet CMM mercury monitoring system is a complete emission monitoring system designed to meet the regulations for continuous mercury measurement standards in different combustion sources. The measurement uncertainty of the system is also the world’s lowest.
